The Gut Microbiome
We are just now beginning to elucidate the importance the gut microbiome has in health and disease. The microbiome can be altered by nutrition, lifestyle, prebiotics and probiotics. While we are now aware that the gut microbiome has an impact on overall health and disease and are now beginning to define microbiome alterations, how to impact the microbiome is also beginning to be elucidated. While there are thousands of probiotics on the market, we now need to look at how these substances can impact diseases and their prevention. For example, PCOS can be altered through the supplementation with Bifidobacterium lactis V9. In one study, supplementation with the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis V9 impacted sex hormones in 9 of 14 PCOS patients. The levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) and LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (LH/FSH) decreased significantly in 9 volunteers, whereas the levels of sex hormones and intestinal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) increased markedly.
